Reading Time: 7 minutes
“But how can they call on Him to save them unless they believe in Him? And how can they believe in Him if they have never heard about Him? And how can they hear about Him unless someone tells them?” (Romans 10:14, NLT).
Lore: “a particular body of knowledge or tradition”
-Merriam Webster
Picture yourself in a dark room.
No light can be seen. Not through the seams of a door or even piercing through a window. And no, not even your phone is flickering a flash from a text message notification. It is just complete and utter darkness.
Have you ever found yourself in such a place? Did you frantically search for a light switch? Was it so dark that it was hard to even see your arms or hands reaching out?
I don’t know about you but simply thinking about being in a dark place like that, let alone being stuck in one, makes me uneasy!
Now, what if I told you a historical narrative of epic proportions, would you believe me? It too involves light and darkness.
The “lore” I’m speaking of is not some scene written by the screenwriter of your favorite Netflix series or some work-from-home game developer fabricating the next big co-op for Playstation. No, the story I’m talking about is the Holy Bible. Unlike any other story ever told, Scripture has the power to captivate you with wisdom-filled truth bombs, have you on the edge of your seat with wonder, in tears from despair or joyful excitement, tickle you with goosebumps from shock, or simply overtake you with a peace that comforts the soul better than your favorite home cooked meal.
And guess what…
You actually have a role in it.
I need you to know that YOU are a part of The Greatest Lore Ever Told.
And that dark room we were contemplating earlier, well, The Greatest Lore Ever Told has the power to shine light in the darkest of places. This is why it’s called The Good News (a.k.a. The Gospel).
“The people who walk in darkness
will see a great light.
For those who live in a land of deep darkness,
a light will shine” (Isaiah 9:2, NIV).
Now this may sound like a cliché but here’s the truth anyways:
John 3:16 is our light switch.
What gets us in these dark places anyways? And why does it overwhelm our spirit with insecurity?
Well, sin has the power to spoil our hearts and darken our lives. Sin separates us humans from being in right relationship with God Almighty. This puts us all in an unfortunate predicament. Fortunately, The Greatest Lore Ever Told gives us the opportunity to choose between two possible conclusions:
Conclusion 1 unfortunately is a dead end. Literally. Should you choose this road {which I pray you don’t}, it will lead you to spiritual death (Revelation 21:8).
Conclusion 2, {the more favorable route} will involve the opposite. This “ending” is actually an epic sequel you can be a part of. It is a choice that will lead you to paradise after death (Revelation 21:4). And this path involves acknowledging that you are in the darkness (a sinner) and needing to be rescued (repentance).
So, the choice is yours. Repent and be saved or continue being the real-life walking dead (John 3:18).
The miracle of a virgin giving birth to the Son of God, so that He would later die a treacherous death in your place, proves you can be rescued. But you must believe that Jesus died on a cross to pay the penalty for your sins so that you will no longer be alienated from God.
But wait, there is more!
Jesus also came back to life on the third day so that those who believe in Him can have salvation through Him (Romans 10:9-13). In other words, although one day you will die, your soul will live on in Christ.
But wait, there is more!
As a gift for your faith in the Gospel, God will in fact give you His Spirit (Luke 11:13) as a seal for the day of redemption (2 Corinthians 1:22). And this is all done for free! #God’sGoodGrace
So, I encourage you today, be born again (John 3:3). Jesus has the power to transform you into a new creation; repent and believe in His name, then your name will be written in The Book of Life {the sequel to The Greatest Lore Ever Told}.
I urge you, as new creations in Christ, to live a life pleasing to God; what a profitable form of worship this is. Do not be led astray by the culture but be filled with discernment because our adversary wants to keep you in the dark.
